The label is re-launched in 2016 with the motto of taking Sri Lankan entertainment global.
1959
Gerald and Dulcie Wickremesooriya started out in business as ‘The Children’s Bookshop’: trading of Children’s books.
1960
Commenced trading of imported records.
Children’s Bookshop was the first to import Beatles records to Sri Lanka. The first 125 records imported sold out on the first day itself.
1968
Sooriya label was established and the first two contracts signed with “The Moonstones”.
1969
Became the sole agents in Sri Lanka for Decca Ceylonese records and a licensee for local recordings on the Decca label.
1969
Launched Sooriya’s first live musical show which later became popular as “The Sooriya Show”.
1971
The label created many a first in the country; the first LP produced in Sri Lanka; the first Sri Lankan member of the International Federation of Phonographic Industry (IFPI); the first to blend traditional drum rhythms with a western orchestra; the first Child artiste to launch a disc.
1972
Sooriya’s entry into the foray of Sinhala classical & traditional music.
1973
Sooriya was the first to popularize pop music in the Tamil language and first to re-create and record music from the old Sinhala theatre.
1974
The first live show hosted on a floating stage: Sooriya Show at St. Joseph’s pool on March 10, 1974.
1975
Sooriya’s entry to religious recordings: a sermon by the famous “Rev. Narada” recorded at the Vajirarama temple premises.
1977
The first to release a double album in Sri Lanka: “Sa” by Victor Ratnayake
1978
Entered in to the foray of Cassettes & Pioneered the setting up of the then popular Sri Lanka Performing Rights Society (SLPRS).
